The Health and Safety Executive swooped on more than 50 sites during the two-day crackdown last month.

Inspectors issued 17 prohibition notices - to halt unsafe work - where they found building methods that could have led to ``serious injury or death''.

inspector Chris Ward said: ``Despite many companies and trades people having been alerted to the blitz, the standard of safety on many sites was still too low.

``There were too many accidents waiting to happen and the number of notices served shows this.

``We also saw many sites where there were well-designed and constructed scaffolds, even on small jobs, which shows that some people are getting the message and looking after their own and their workers' safety,'' Mr Ward said.

If the prohibition notices are ignored, the HSE can prosecute.

There were 114 fatal injuries in the construction industry in 12 months ending in March last year, eight of them to members of the public, the HSE said.

More than 5,000 people suffered serious injuries.
