first-birthday present today: its 65,000th customer.

First launched in Cox's Orange County, Calif., cable system on October 29, 1997, Cox Digital TV is now available in parts of eight Cox markets nationwide and will be launched in three additional areas within the next few months. Cox Digital TV delivers digital picture and sound, greater viewing control and convenience, and enhanced programming choices. It adds nearly 100 digital video channels to Cox's lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime. , for a total of more than 200 video and audio channels.

"We're very pleased with the early results of Cox Digital TV," said Virginia Gray, Cox's Vice President of Marketing. "While we're careful not to draw long-term conclusions from these initial findings, we're delighted that our customers seem to greatly value this new service and have embraced the many TV viewing benefits it provides."

Gray cited the following highlights, culled from customer research and operating results:

-- Cox Digital TV is generating between $15 and $18 per customer per

revenue, comprised of subscriptions to the

service and resulting increases in pay-per-view and

premium-service purchases. -- Research shows that enhanced programming is driving customers'

purchase of Cox Digital TV. In particular, they cite the many

movie choices as their favorite feature. -- Customer satisfaction is high; 80 percent of customers would

recommend it to a friend. -- Cox Digital TV customers watch more TV - about 10 percent more

than before subscribing. Further, they now spend about 50 percent

of their TV time watching the digital channels, at the sacrifice

of over-the-air broadcast channels. They also report renting

fewer videos. -- Customers value the interactive program guide. Eighty percent say

they use the guide daily, while two-thirds report that it's easy

to use.

"Another early highlight is that Cox Digital TV has helped increase the penetration of premium networks like HBO Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO)

Elander added, "Our strategy behind Cox Digital TV is to increase incremental revenue and to retain customers. So far, we've seen promising results on both fronts. The 65,000-customer milestone is particularly gratifying grat·i·fy

Penetration rates for Cox Digital TV in the areas in which it has been marketed for 10 months or more range from 6 percent to 15 percent of "digital-ready" Cox customer homes, and 5 percent to 12 percent of total digital-ready homes passed (including non-customer homes). Depending on the status of local network upgrades, digital-ready homes in Cox Digital TV's eight current markets range from 20 percent to 100 percent of total homes passed.
