Cox has written an elegant Victorian literary thriller with so much period detail and verisimilitude that it could easily pass for the real thing. The novel purports to be the confessional manuscript of Edward Glyver, who dispassionately kills a total stranger in its opening lines as a dress rehearsal for his planned murder of Phoebus Daunt daunt
