Cows rescued from sea.

TWO cows had to be rescued by the Coastguard after swimming out to sea when they escaped from an abattoir abattoir (ăb'ətwär`) [Fr.], building for butchering. The abattoir houses facilities to slaughter animals; dress, cut and inspect meats; and refrigerate, cure, and manufacture byproducts.  in Sitra.

They were spotted about a mile out by sailor Paul Truscott and his wife Janet, who immediately alerted the Coastguard.

The Australian cattle escaped from the Bahrain Livestock Company abattoir with 13 others on Saturday after someone apparently left a gate open.

"The cattle managed to leave the yards at the abattoir in Sitra and headed towards the Bahrain Yacht Club," said MLA Middle East and Africa livestock services manager Peter Dundon. He said all but the two who went into the water were rounded up with minimal stress by Bahrain Livestock Company stockmen, helped by officials from Al Areen wildlife reserve and others.

"Australian cattle are less used to being handled than local cattle and this process required some assistance from other parties, for which we are grateful," said Mr Dundon.

Mr Dundon apologised for any concern the incident may have caused, saying it was the first time that this occurred at the abattoir in over 20 years.
