This highly lauded compilation Compiling a program. See compiler.  of 34 articles on the Civil War has much to recommend it. The authors chosen include some of the most famous names among Civil War historians. David Herbert Donald David Herbert Donald (b. 1920, Goodman, Mississippi) is a historian of the American Civil War.

Donald took his PhD in 1945 under James G. Randall at the University of Illinois. He taught at Columbia University, Johns Hopkins and, from 1973, Harvard University.
 has only one article here, but it is an excellent chapter taken from his biography of Lincoln. Gary Gallagher has a well-considered article on Lee. James McPherson James McPherson is the name of several people:
  • James Alan McPherson, Pulitzer prize winner and instructor at the University of Iowa Writer's Workshop
  • James Alpin McPherson, Australian bushranger
  • James B. McPherson, General in the United States Civil War
  • James M.
, Stephen Sears and Gary Gallagher, all well-known experts, are represented, as well as Noah Andre Trudeau and Joseph Glatthaar. The essays run about 15 pages each, and each first appeared in the Quarterly Journal of Military History, which, despite its scholarly title, is written for the general public and includes no annotation 1. (programming, compiler) annotation - Extra information associated with a particular point in a document or program. Annotations may be added either by a compiler or by the programmer.  at all. The book also lacks an index. Despite these drawbacks, the wide range of topics, from battleground to personalities to politics, and the general accessibility of the material recommend the work.
