Joel and Ethan Coen have signed up to make a new version of the 1969 film, which won acting legend Wayne his only best actor Oscar.

The brothers have made a string of off-beat films including 1998's The Big Lebowski.

Last night, a source said: "After No Country For Old Men, the doors have been opened for the Coen brothers to choose the films they would like to work on.

"Now they look like tackling one of the most difficult remakes - True Grit."
