Covia Technologies ships Version 3.1 of the Communications Integrator with a new level of message integrity.

ROSEMONT, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 1995--Covia Technologies is now delivering an enhanced version of the Communications Integrator(R) (CI(R) ), its business-critical distributed applications An application made up of distinct components running in separate runtime environments, usually on different platforms connected via a network. Typical distributed applications  middleware Software that functions as a conversion or translation layer. It is also a consolidator and integrator. Custom-programmed middleware solutions have been developed for decades to enable one application to communicate with another that either runs on a different platform or comes from a .

This latest version, Version 3.1, responds to customer requests for new messaging services, toolkits, applications and component integrators.

"Our team's commitment to implementing these enhancements on time enables Covia Technologies to continue its innovative leadership in the market for business-critical distributed applications middleware," said Terry Porter Terry Porter (born April 8 1963 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is a former professional basketball player and coach in the NBA. He played college ball at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and had a 17-year career in the NBA. , CT's vice president product management and business development. "Moreover, our customer base requested Version 3.1's enhancements, and this allowed us to provide more value and performance to them."

The CI gives application developers a way to build applications that operate across heterogeneous or homogeneous computer networks, platforms and operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. . It provides full interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other.  among legacy systems and distributed computing environments See DCE.

Distributed Computing Environment - (DCE) An architecture consisting of standard programming interfaces, conventions and server functionalities (e.g. naming, distributed file system, remote procedure call) for distributing applications transparently across networks
, including multiple Unix platforms, as well as any number of hardware, software and network combinations. The CI runs on 19 platforms, including HP-UX HP's version of Unix that runs on its 9000 family. It is based on SVID and incorporates features from BSD Unix along with several HP innovations.

, AT&T UNIX, and Sun Microsystems' Solaris and SunOS.

All existing customers with maintenance agreements will receive Version 3.1 free of charge. Briefly, these are the enhancements they will see:

o Application Acknowledged Delivery. With the release of Version 3.1 of the CI, Covia Technologies introduces a new class of service with Application Acknowledged Delivery. This sets a standard in message integrity. Application Acknowledged Delivery gives an application the power to combine the highest level of integrity with their business functions. The CI safe-stores the message until the receiving application acknowledges to the CI that it has received and processed the message. Like all CI message services, Application Acknowledged Delivery is selectable on a per-message basis.

o Support for Co-Resident CIs. Version 3.1 supports multiple CI environments running on a single UNIX system Noun 1. UNIX system - trademark for a powerful operating system

operating system, OS - (computer science) software that controls the execution of computer programs and may provide various services
. It can simultaneously support any combination of development, test and production environments.

o CI Pulse. The powerful combination of CI Pulse utilities enable users to monitor and troubleshoot their CI-enabled distributed environments. CI Pulse quickly determines the status of the CI applications running across the network, either on an ad-hoc or an ongoing basis. For example, one utility called CI Heartbeat proactively monitors the state of critical applications, giving proactive indications of problems in the network, systems or applications.

o CI QuickStart Toolkit. The new QuickStart Toolkit jump-starts and applications programmer's productivity in a distributed environment. The toolkit provides application templates and sample applications for multiple programming models, including client/server, peer-to-peer and transactional messaging.

o Applications Developer's Toolkit A set of software routines and utilities used to help programmers write an application. For graphical interfaces, it provides the tools and libraries for creating menus, dialog boxes, fonts and icons. . This new toolkit helps create a set of tools for creating CI distributed environments. It includes routines to abstract the functions and data structures commonly used during setup, message sending, message receiving and return code analysis. The toolkit provides developers with a means to manipulate various structures in the CI request block, without having to know the details of the structure.

o CI Configurator. The new CI Configurator is a visual tool used for planning, configuring, and designing virtual CI networks. Early release customers have already seen the power and benefit of intelligent route generation and cloning of CI-nodes. Also, the CI Configurator assists the designer by performing cross checks and validation of network routing and the generation of individual configuration files for all nodes on the network.

o CI View. This feature allows systems administrators to view the entire logical network and manage the CI from a single workstation. They can manage the system up to enterprise-wide, or down to local or remote basis, all with an easy-to-understand, command-line view.
