Coventry Health Care Files Lawsuit to Protect Member Coverage in Western Pennsylvania.


BETHESDA, Md.--(BW HealthWire)--Aug. 11, 1998--Coventry Health Care, Inc. (Nasdaq/NM:CVTY) and HealthAmerica Pennsylvania, Inc., a managed care subsidiary of Coventry, today announced that they have filed a lawsuit in the state court in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania Allegheny County is a county in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the population was 1,281,666. The county seat is Pittsburgh. , against Allegheny General Hospital Allegheny General Hospital is a large urban hospital located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Allegheny General Hospital, also commonly known locally by the acronym "AGH," was founded in 1885 in Pittsburgh's North Side, in the area formally known as Allegheny City. , Forbes Health System, Allegheny Valley Hospital, and Cannonsburg Hospital, subsidiaries of Allegheny Health, Education and Research Foundation (AHERF) not included in the parent's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing on July 21, 1998.

In their lawsuit, Coventry and HealthAmerica are seeking:

-- A court order compelling the hospitals to fulfill their contractual obligations to continue to provide health care

services to HealthAmerica's 290,000 members in western Pennsylvania.

-- Monetary damages of $108 million related to AHERF's and its affiliates' failure to fulfill their contractual obligations under the risk-sharing contract.

"This action assures the continuity of care to our members and protects the interests of our shareholders and other constituencies," said Dale B. Wolf, chief financial officer of Coventry.
