Covad Communications (Nasdaq:COVD) officially debuted today as the Official Broadband Provider to the 2000 America League West Division Champion Oakland Athletics. The Network Associates Coliseum, home of the Athletics, is the first baseball stadium in the United States to have broadband DSL connections available to fans, the team, administrative offices, and media representatives in the press box. The multi-tiered program is designed as a creative partnership between the Oakland A's and Covad to showcase and demonstrate the broadband experience. It will also provide broadband to several Oakland schools with the Covad JumpStart Challenge.

An In-Stadium "Test Drive"

Fans can experience a hands-on "test drive" of Covad DSL inside the "Covad Corner," a special area in the popular West Side Club, or inside one of 20 luxury suites throughout the stadium, including the newly renamed Covad SkyView Terrace -- a 100 person suite available daily for large groups -- which has 10 DSL ports. This allows luxury box attendees to go to the game and "stay connected" to the office and the Internet. The entire press area is wired for Covad DSL so reporters will be able to file stories using a broadband connection and not have to rely on a much slower dial-up connection. Finally, team manager Art Howe's and his coaches' offices, the player's locker room and team administrative offices will be equipped with broadband DSL service.

Covad JumpStart Challenge

Oakland's schools will benefit through the Covad Jumpstart Challenge. Each time the A's Johnny Damon, last year's American League stolen base champion, steals a base at Network Associates Coliseum, Covad will provide one of Oakland's 23 public middle and high schools with a high-speed, always-on DSL connection in the school's library. Covad hopes the Internet connection will provide students and teachers the opportunity to experience the educational possibilities of the Net. Covad Corner

Located in the West Side Club, the Covad Corner showcases the advantages of Covad DSL and allows everyone in attendance the opportunity to experience a high speed, always-on Internet connection. There will also be information on the Covad DSL JumpStart Kit and the opportunity to qualify and sign-up for Covad service.

For Oakland A's fans, Covad has installed two "Covad Cams," one behind home plate and one in the A's dugout. These unique images are exclusively available for viewing in the Covad Corner. Celebrities and former A's players will visit the Covad Corner to do special appearances, chat online with their fans and sign autographs. Starting this Saturday, all KABL radio post-game broadcasts will be hosted "Live from the Covad Corner."

Covad Jump Start Challenge and DSL JumpStart Kit

The Covad JumpStart Challenge refers to Covad's new self-installation kit, which allows residential customers to easily install DSL themselves. Designed with the consumer experience in mind, the Covad DSL JumpStart Kit walks the consumer through a simple three-step installation process. The consumer is guided by easy instructions with pictures that provide the consumer with information needed for each step. The installation process includes preparing the consumer's house by attaching DSL blockers to every telephone; connecting the DSL modem to the computer; and installing software that will automatically connect the consumer's computer to the Internet. It is expected that the installation process will take approximately 30 minutes.

Other Program Details

The program also includes a video e-mail hosted by 2000 American League MVP Jason Giambi that will be sent to more than 77,000 fans describing the benefits of Covad DSL and encouraging fans to attend A's baseball games.

Fans at the stadium will see the Covad name on a 30-foot upper deck sign in left field. The press and luxury box fans will be reminded of their broadband connection as each Ethernet port is labeled with "Broadband Connection provided by Covad."
