Courthouse road money gets OK.

Byline: Edward Russo The Register-Guard

Street money for Eugene's proposed federal courthouse is on the move.

A House of Representatives committee on Wednesday approved a $275 billion transportation funding bill, including $6 million to pay for street improvements around Eugene's planned Wayne Morse Wayne Lyman Morse (October 20, 1900 – July 22, 1974) was a United States Senator from Oregon from 1945 until 1969. In 1953, he made a filibuster for 22 hours and 26 minutes protesting the Tidelands Oil legislation, which at the time was the longest one-person filibuster in  Federal Courthouse.

 said.

The bill will be sent to the full House for approval, then to a House and U.S. Senate conference committee before going to the president for signature.

on behalf of local officials. The Springfield lawmaker succeeded in getting other local projects in the bill, including $15 million for the Interstate 5/Belt Line Road interchange, $4 million for rapid transit rapid transit, transportation system designed to allow passenger travel within or throughout an urban area, usually employing surface, elevated, or underground railway systems or some combination of these.  buses for Lane Transit District A transit district or transit authority is a special-purpose district organized as either a corporation chartered by statute, or a government agency, created for the purpose of providing public transportation within a specific region. , and $1.9 million for the South Bank Trail extension.

Among other things, the courthouse work will extend Sixth Avenue east along the railroad tracks to Franklin Boulevard at Hilyard Street, widen Eighth Avenue between Mill Street and Hilyard Street, and extend Ferry Street Ferry Street (Chinese: 渡船街) is a street between Ferry Point and Mong Kok Tsui in Kowloon, Hong Kong. The street was on the shore of old reclamation before the new West Kowloon reclamation in 1990s.  north from Eighth Avenue to the new Sixth Avenue.

The street improvements are key to redeveloping the area and getting 42,000 cars a day around the planned courthouse.

"Without the street improvements, the courthouse district would be an urban island," said Jason Heuser, Eugene's Intergovernmental Relations manager.

The courthouse groundbreaking is scheduled for April 7. The $70 million building could be completed in 2007.

It probably will be late summer or fall before Eugene knows for sure if it will get the $6 million in street money. Assistant City Manager Jim Carlson said DeFazio's standing will help the city's chances.

"We're very confident," he said. "Peter is a senior member of the House Transportation Infrastructure Committee. I think these projects will be in the final legislation."

Eugene is supposed to contribute $1.6 million to the total of $7.6 million in street work around the courthouse.

So far, the city has a pledge from Lane County for $325,000. Eugene officials have asked the county, which dispenses road funds, for the $1.275 million balance.

A county roads advisory committee is scheduled to meet March 31 to make a recommendation on the request, Carlson said, with a final decision by the Lane County Board of Commissioners in May.

The $15 million appropriation for the future improvements to the I-5/Belt Line Road interchange is part of the massive proposed project, estimated to cost more than $100 million.

The $1.9 million for the South Bank Trail will help build a path along the Willamette River Willamette River
