Advocate for Rape Survivors Among Those Honored

In a special presentation on May 21, 2002, at the House Rayburn Building, Room 339, from noon to 1:30 p.m., Court TV will recognize nine people who, in the course of their work, have demonstrated acts of bravery and courage and, in many cases, acted with tremendous grace under pressure. Joining Court TV in honoring these citizens are Congressional Representatives Billy Tauzin Wilbert Joseph Tauzin, II, usually known as Billy Tauzin, (born June 14 1943), American politician of Cajun descent, was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1980 to 2005, representing Louisiana's 3rd congressional district.  (R-LA), Edward Markey (D-MA) and Mary Bono Mary Whitaker Bono is an American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1998, representing the 45th District of California (map) which includes most of central and eastern Riverside County.  (R-CA). This celebration is part of Court TV's continuing Everyday Heroes Initiative.

Lisa Jefferson - Lisa was the Airfone operator who handled the critical call from passenger Todd Beamer Todd Morgan Beamer (November 24, 1968 – September 11, 2001) was a passenger aboard United Airlines Flight 93 and a victim of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Beamer attended Los Gatos High School, Wheaton Academy, DePaul University, California State University, Fresno
 from the doomed United Airlines flight 93 on September 11. Lisa is from Hazel Creek, Illinois, and was nominated by AT&T Broadband.

Debbie Smith - As a rape survivor herself, Debbie has devoted her life to raising awareness Raising awareness is a common phrase advocacy groups use to justify a particular event, brochure or even the entire organization. Raising awareness refers to alerting the general public that a certain issue exists and should be approached the way the group desires.  of issues confronting rape survivors. Chief of Police Kim Tierney - As a member of the Lighthouse Point Police Department in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Kim worked her way up through the force during a time when few women chose police work as a vocation. Apprehending criminals, she has repeatedly put her life on the line. Chief of Police since 1998, she has instituted massive improvements in areas such as technology, communications and domestic violence investigations. Kim was nominated by AT&T Broadband.

Sherron Watkins - Sherron Watkins is a vice president of corporate development for Enron Corporation who, despite the threat of possible sanctions or dismissal, stood up for the truth by informing her superiors of irregularities in the accounting practices at Enron. When federal authorities seized company documents, they found her warning communication to Enron superiors, which led to her testifying before the U.S. Congress. This took courage and strong moral and ethical conviction. Sherron is from Houston, Texas.

Lieutenant Jerome Williams - As a Lieutenant with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue in Fairfax, Virginia, Jerome Williams was among the first to respond to the Pentagon on September 11. He is a basic training instructor and medical specialist who, during a flight abroad on behalf of the Office of Foreign Disaster, saved a woman choking to death, by performing life-saving measures using only the limited resources available on the plane. Williams was nominated by Cox Communications.

Police Officers John Sleboda and Matthew Domer - Officers Sleboda and Domer of the Montgomery County Police Department responded to a domestic violence call, only to find themselves thrust in the middle of a gun battle between a husband and his wife and three children. Their quick action, wrestling the husband to the ground and seizing the weapon, saved lives. The wife suffered gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby trauma center trauma center

. The Montgomery County Police Department is in Maryland, and Officers Sleboda and Domer were nominated by Comcast Communications.

Court TV's Everyday Heroes Initiative is part of the network's ongoing effort to partner with cable operators and legislators in Washington D.C. and throughout the country to recognize exceptional citizens. As part of the initiative, Court TV, in conjunction with its cable operator partners, also holds local recognition programs and produces Public Service Announcements (PSA's) featuring the hero for the local cable operator to air.
