As the interrogation wore on, with the police informing him repeatedly that they had evidence proving his involvement - which they did not have - Crowe, visibly distraught and overwhelmed, changed his story and made incriminating statements. Crowe and two friends were eventually arrested and charged with the murder of his sister.

Shortly after the murder, the police also arrested a homeless, mentally ill, drifter named Richard Raymond Richard Raymond may refer to:

 Tuite near the Crowe home. Tuite's blood-stained clothes were retained by the police, but he was released from custody. As the trial of Michael Crowe was about to get underway, DNA tests DNA test nDNS-Test m  proved that the blood on the drifter's clothes was that of Stephanie Crowe. Michael Crowe and his two friends were then released, and the charges against them were dropped. Tuite, who is now in police custody on other charges, has still not been charged with the murder.
