Course examines cryogenics.

Cryogenic engineering will be examined during a short course, sponsored by Cryoco, to be held July 31 to August 5 at the Omni Interlocken Resort in Boulder, CO.

Course objectives include building a solid foundation in the fundamentals of cryogenics cryogenics: see low-temperature physics.
cryogenics

Study and use of low-temperature phenomena. The cryogenic temperature range is from −238°F (−150°C) to absolute zero. At low temperatures, matter has unusual properties.
, encouraging a hands-on approach to solving cryogenic problems, defining and demonstrating what is different at low temperatures, and providing up-to-date cryogenic information.

The cryogenic engineering short course is designed to be practical, not theoretical. The lecture material is continually modified to provide the most up-to-date instruction possible for engineers and others working in the cryogenics industry. Students and faculty work out real workshop problems chosen from the most current personal experience.

This short course is a practical course, taught by working engineers for working engineers. The course has 40 contact hours of instruction, the same as a three-semester-hour university level engineering course.

On Monday, July 31, instructors will present an introduction, review of basic concepts, including thermodynamic ther·mo·dy·nam·ic

On Tuesday, August 1, instructors will discuss cryogenic equipment (compressors and expanders, storage vessels, heat exchangers, cryogenic transfer lines, two-phase flow, cryogenic valves and insulation), as well as cryogenic engineering instrumentation (strain and displacement measurements, pressure, flow and liquid level, thermometry thermometry

 and a cryogenic instrumentation workshop.

On Wednesday, August 2, instructors will discuss properties of solids at low temperatures, including brittle versus ductile behavior, mechanical properties of materials of construction at low temperatures, transport properties of materials at low temperatures, electrical properties of materials at low temperatures, sources of data on properties of materials and a properties of solids workshop, as well as refrigeration and liquefaction liquefaction, change of a substance from the solid or the gaseous state to the liquid state. On Thursday, August 3, instructors will discuss cryogenic systems, including storage vessel considerations, fluid transfer considerations and sources of data and analysis codes.

On Friday, August 4, instructors will examine liquefied natural gas liquefied natural gas: see under natural gas.

Instructors will include Dr. Thomas M. Flynn, author of the course text, "Cryogenic Engineering"; Dr. Arthur Kidnay, Colorado School of Mines Colorado School of Mines, at Golden; state supported, coeducational; chartered 1874. It was one of the first mineral engineering schools in the United States. ; Dr. Robert S. Rudland; and Robert Bell, Boeing.

Course fees are $2,950. In addition to the course text, "Cryogenic Engineering," by Dr. Flynn, registrants will receive the course notes, compiled and updated by the instructors and containing over 900 pages of information and complete notes for each lecture.

This course is designed for engineers, analysts, technicians and test engineers, managers and administrators.

Further information on this cryogenic engineering short course is available from Dr. Thomas M. Flynn (303) 665-8302.
