Courage under fire.

AT 3am on Saturday morning I was out in a beer garden with friends, when I began a profound meditation about what makes the British nation truly great.

It's not our industrial heritage.

Or our record in overseas wars.

Or the fact that we dabbled with democracy earlier than most other Western nations.

Nope.

I'm proud to be British because this is the only country I know where girls force themselves to flounce around in mini-skirts in a beer garden, even on a freezing, rain-spattered night.

That's courage under fire, right there.
