with calls from more than 70 couples making inquiries about the 50/50 Tea Dance at St Mary's Guildhall on June 5.

But the dance, which is open to couples who will be celebrating their golden wedding anniversaries this year, can only cater for 50 couples.

And with the deadline to apply for tickets being on May 6, event organisers now say they may have to resort to picking the lucky couples out of a hat. The event will be hosted by the next Lord Mayor of Coventry, Cllr Ken Taylor.

said: "The phone has been red hot and hasn't stopped ringing.

"We predicted that a total of 20 couples would show an interest and nothing like 70 in a few days. But we are pleasantly surprised with the response.

"The dance isn't on a first come first served basis and it looks as though we are going to have to look at pulling names out of a hat.

"They have to have room to dance, so it wouldn't be fair to cram everyone in."

She added that one solution would be to organise a second date for the dance.

She said: "We couldn't just get a larger venue because the prestigious St Mary's is the whole attraction of the tea dance.

"But it may be possible to arrange a tea dance on another evening. It would be a real shame if we had to disappoint so many people."

Meanwhile 20 people have already applied to the city council to hold street parties for the Golden Jubilee.

This compares with seven street parties on Millen-nium night.
