A couple whose gift to the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  helped establish a signature research center received one of the UO's highest honors at this year's commencement ceremonies.

Also among those recognized at Saturday's event was former Oregon resident and UO graduate Lee Bollinger Lee C. Bollinger is an American lawyer and educator who is currently serving as the 19th president of Columbia University. The center and its research-grade magnetic resonance imaging magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), noninvasive diagnostic technique that uses nuclear magnetic resonance to produce cross-sectional images of organs and other internal body structures.  device has boosted the university into the forefront of brain imaging and research. The Lewises' gift provided start-up costs, supports endowed professorships and helps cover support costs and research.

In addition, the couple donated $5 million to establish the Robert and Beverly Lewis Family Cancer Care Center at Pomona Valley Hospital in California and have made gifts to various other medical institutions. They also have endowed scholarships at Dartmouth and The Claremont Colleges.

Bollinger, who wasn't able to make it to the ceremony, was named the UO Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni. Raised in Baker City, Bollinger graduated from the UO with a political science degree before earning a law degree at Columbia. He became president at Michigan in 1996, and he made the decision to defend his institution's affirmative action policy when the school was sued by three students over the admissions practice.

The suit is currently pending before the Supreme Court.

Other awards granted in Saturday's ceremony include:

UO Alumni Association Young Alumni Award - Marcia Leonard Aaron has built a 17-year career in the securities industry and is a senior research analyst at Pacific Growth Equities in San Francisco, focusing on specialty apparel retailers. She grew up in Southern Oregon and studied journalism at the UO and is a member of the UO Foundation board of trustees board of trustees Politics The posse of thugs who oversee an institution's administration. See Board of directors. . A student lounge in Allen Hall is named after her in recognition of a gift toward renovation of the journalism building.

Distinguished Service Awards - Author and historian Edwin Bingham, human service and civil rights advocate Ellen Lowe and attorney Charles Porter were chosen by UO faculty for an award that recognizes those who have used their knowledge and skills to make contributions to the state's cultural development and society as a whole.

Wayne T. Westling Award - Chemistry professor emeritus Peter von Hippel was chosen by the University Senate for this award recognizing leadership and service. Von Hippel has been a faculty member since 1967 and has served as director of the Institute of Molecular Biology molecular biology, scientific study of the molecular basis of life processes, including cellular respiration, excretion, and reproduction. The term molecular biology was coined in 1938 by Warren Weaver, then director of the natural sciences program at the Rockefeller  and head of the chemistry department. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and remains active in research. He has served as an ad hoc For this purpose. In addition to faculty awards, a dozen students received universitywide awards this year for scholarship, service and commitment to the university. They are:

Meghan Madden - Vernon Barkhurst Award, given to a sophomore.

Grace Wang - Jim Buch Award, given to a junior. Includes a $1,000 scholarship.

Rachel Pilliod - Bess Templeton Cristman Award, given to a junior woman. Includes a full-tuition grant.

Gabe Sitowski - Frohnmayer Recognition Award, given to a continuing student.

Myra Kim - Gerlinger Cup, given to a junior woman.

Eric Bailey - Ray Hawk Award, given to a senior.

Khanh Le - Mary Hudzikiewicz Award, given to a freshman.

Toby Hill-Meyer - Maurice Harold Hunter Leadership Award, given to a junior man. Includes a full-tuition grant.

Cory Portnuff - Koyl Cup, given to a junior man.

Kawezya Hutchinson - Paul Olum Award, given to a senior.

Gabriela Serrano - Wilson Cup, given to a senior.
