Couple rescued.

Two walkers were rescued by RAF helicopter after becoming lost for more than three hours yesterday.

The man, 60, and his wife, 57, were walking in Kidland Forest, near Alwinton, Northumberland.

They contacted a friend by mobile phone who got in touch with police.

Northumberland National Park search and rescue team and a helicopter from RAF Boulmer were alerted.

The couple used their phone to give directions to the Sea King pilot but then lost the signal. Search teams were sent in but the helicopter managed to locate them at around 7.30pm and they were flown to Alwinton unharmed.

Six questioned

SIX people are being questioned by police after a man was allegedly kidnapped.

The 30-year-old man was allegedly lured to the Owton Pub, Hartlepool, on Tuesday, where the incident started. Any witnesses should call (01642) 302126.

Extra holiday

MORE than 1,000 pupils at Mortimer Comprehensive in South Tyneside had an extra day's holiday yesterday after problems with the school's heating system. Parents are advised to call the school, in Reading Road, South Shields, on (0191) 456511 for details on re-opening.

Man identified

RELATIVES of an unidentified man, 42, from the Chester-le-Street area who was injured after being hit by a car on Monday came forward yesterday.
