The man, 60, and his wife, 57, were walking in Kidland Forest, near Alwinton, Northumberland.
They contacted a friend by mobile phone who got in touch with police.
Northumberland National Park search and rescue team and a helicopter from RAF Boulmer were alerted.
The couple used their phone to give directions to the Sea King pilot but then lost the signal. Search teams were sent in but the helicopter managed to locate them at around 7.30pm and they were flown to Alwinton unharmed.
SIX people are being questioned by police after a man was allegedly kidnapped.
