William Farley, 87, and his wife Marjorie, 86, were killed in the blaze at their home in Abergavenny, South Wales South Wales south n → sud m du Pays de Galles . Sunderland-born Mr Farley had worked his way up from telephonist with Durham police to become the first Chief Constable of Gwent Police when the force was formed in 1967. After seeing action in France and winning the Military Cross in the Second World War he returned to Durham police and in 1958 he became Assistant Chief Constable in the Monmouthshire force before rising to the top job. |
