"Professor Weatherhead was gentle with students, and I tried to take the same approach in my own teaching," Lee said.

The professorship was established in Shakespeare at the suggestion of Weatherhead, who still lives in Eugene. Lee said Shakespeare's writing tells more about the human experience than any other body of work.

The Lees established the Gloria Tovar Lee Scholarship in Art History because of their avid interest in art. In addition to their museum travels, Robert Lee taught a course in American art for several years.

Gloria Lee worked in the UO's Robert D. Clarke Honors College when the couple lived in Eugene and taught elementary school in San Bernardino.

"The gift from Bob and Gloria Lee stands out because it will truly transform lives," Robert Melnick, dean of the UO School of Architecture and Allied Arts, said in the announcement. "With the UO's fund-raising efforts concentrating on the impact of donations to support teaching and expand opportunities for students, the Lees' gift addresses critical needs of art history students. We are most appreciative of their leadership and generosity."
