Coup plot accused go on trial; COURTS.MOREthan 50 people accused of a right-wing plot to topple the Turkish government went on trial yesterday. The 56 accused - including two retired generals - are suspected of planning a series of bombings and assassinations. It is claimed it was to force the army to step in against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. Almost 200 people have been charged in connection with the plot including retired and active army officers, lawyers, journalists and politicians.
