County grants approval to ambulance service.Byline: JOE MOSLEY Mos·ley , Sir Oswald Ernald 1896-1980. British politician and the founder and leader of the British fascist party. The Register-Guard Lane County commissioners' temporary approval earlier this month of Lane Rural Fire & Rescue's bid to provide its own ambulance service became the final word on Tuesday Tuesday: see week. . Commissioners unanimously approved Lane Rural's request, opening the door for the fire district to begin rolling its ambulances in a broad area northwest of Eugene Eugene, city (1990 pop. 112,669), seat of Lane co., W Oregon, on the Willamette River; inc. 1862. The district must first get final approval from the state Health Department. "My overall concern is that we improve ambulance service," said Commissioner Peter Sorenson, who had voted against the temporary approval two weeks ago. The Eugene department opposed Lane Rural's proposal because it didn't take into account the needs of other rural districts or potential financial effects on the Eugene department. "Money, which is very significant, is not as significant to me as the response times," Sorenson said. Lane Rural officials expect to decrease ambulance response times throughout the area they will serve, with station-to-destination arrivals in some areas reduced by as much as eight minutes. "That's life-and-death," Commissioner Cindy Weeldreyer said. "The facts have been stated and restated. We've received stacks and stacks of paperwork on this - I think it's keeping the timber industry in business." The Eugene department submitted a stack of paperwork more than an inch thick - including photocopies of e-mail messages, draft sections of the study and other documents. But the commissioners also were given copies of a poll by the Lane County Fire Defense Board indicating that none of the county's 24 fire departments outside of Eugene had been involved in the study on an ongoing basis. "Eugene was pretty clear in the past, they wanted to get out of the rural business," Rockstroh said. "It was just a question of the glide path - when they wanted to do that. This ... pushes the glide path and forces the issue." Rural fire districts, all of which provide first-response emergency medical care within their boundaries, have been largely complimentary of the Eugene and Springfield departments' ability to respond when patients in the rural areas need advanced care and must be transported to hospitals. But Lane Rural bought two ambulances in February 2000 after deciding it could better serve residents of its district with ambulances stationed within the district. Lane Rural applied to the county for its own ambulance service district, and the county's Health Advisory Committee recommended last spring that application be granted - for service not only within the Lane Rural district but also for Junction City Junction City, city (1990 pop. 20,604), seat of Geary co., NE Kans., at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers; inc. 1859. The committee also suggested that the Monroe and Harrisburg areas - both currently served by Eugene ambulances - would be better served by Lane Rural.
