County election workers get roomier digs.

Byline: COUNTY BEAT By Randi Bjornstad The Register-Guard

This November, voters shouldn't have to stand in lines that snake out the door of the county elections office, waiting for help with problem ballots or last-minute changes in their registrations.

That's because the county's old, outgrown and outmoded facility in the Lane County Annex at 135 E. Sixth Ave. in downtown Eugene will be a thing of the past.

On Aug. 23, the elections office will move into new quarters at 275 W. 10th Ave. The refurbished building more than doubles the size of the old location's 7,000 square feet.

In addition to providing enough space to handle the records of more and more voters as the county grows, the new space will be large enough to accommodate the elections office's new optical scanning voting machines.

The machines were mandated by the federal Help America Vote Act The Help America Vote Act (HAVA, Pub.L. 107-252) is a United States federal law passed the House 357-48 and 92-2 in the Senate[1] and was signed into law by President Bush on October 29, 2002.  to minimize difficulties with old-style voting equipment used throughout the country - most notably in Florida - during the 2000 presidential election.

The county received $500,000 in grants toward purchase of the optical scanners, which were used in the Feb. 3 special election and during the May 18 primary election.

Bike giveaway for

kids postponed

Not enough money has come in so far to finish refurbishing 400 bicycles donated by Lane County residents for low-income kids, so the Lane County sheriff's office bike giveaway has been postponed.

The annual event provides bikes for children in foster care and those who live in housing units owned by the Lane County Housing and Community Services Agency.

Each child who receives a bike also gets a free helmet. Last year's effort produced 90 bicycles and 100 children received helmets.

Some of the donated bicycles "are in good condition, some need a little repair work and others will be used for parts," said Patti Edwards, records officer for the sheriff's office. "We've been very busy trying to raise the funds necessary to accomplish all of the repairs and buy the helmets."

The project still needs about $900 for helmets and $2,000 for new tires, brake cables, handle grips and seats. Sheriff's deputies donate their own time to perform the necessary labor.

Contributions can be made to the LCSO LCSO Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra (New Mexico)  Bike for Kids Fund at any branch of US Bank.
