County's jobless rate declines in May.

A stronger than normal construction industry coupled with continued health in the retail sector contributed to a better-than-expected employment picture in Lane County last month.

The seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate dropped to 4.7 percent in May, closing the gap with the statewide unemployment rate, also reported at 4.7 percent last month. Lane County has a civilian work force of just over 179,000 people, of which nearly 171,000 had jobs last month.

Increases in government hiring this time of year usually result from seasonal employment in parks and recreation programs, Rooney said.

Manufacturing was the only area in which employment numbers fell from a year ago, down 700 jobs compared with May 2006.
