Countryside is close by; YourSay.

I THINK B Hopkins, of Northfield, needs to get out more (letters, July 28). He says that this country is overcrowded compared with France and other countries on the Continent, with towns and cites merging into each other.

You don't have to go far out of the West Midlands conurbation The West Midlands conurbation is the name given to the large conurbation that includes the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton and the large towns of Dudley, Walsall, West Bromwich and Solihull, in the English West Midlands.  to get into some wonderful countryside. Head north-east through Sutton Coldfield Sutton Coldfield, city (1991 pop. 102,572), Birmingham metropolitan district, central England. The city is a residential suburb of Birmingham with a metal products industry and a large television transmitting station.  and you will get into the Staffordshire countryside and, eventually, the magnificent Peak District. Head south-east through Solihull and you are soon in the glorious Warwickshire countryside and not long to reach the Cotswolds. Head south-west, via Northfield if you like, and you're soon in the Worcestershire countryside, including the Vale of Evesham The Vale of Evesham is the name used for the area of southern Worcestershire, England, along the valley of the River Avon, centred on the town of Evesham.

The Vale of Evesham has little industry, being mostly agricultural.
 and the Severn valley.

North-west is a bit of a problem, and I guess this may be the only journey B Hopkins has taken, because you do have to go through West Brom, Dudley and Wolverhampton, before reaching any countryside, but then you hit Staffordshire and Shropshire.

Steve Hall, Cheswick Green n I READ B Hopkins' letter, "Britain is too crowded". How long will it be before this country is completely concreted over?
