Chronicle Subscription

I'm definitely going to have to get a subscription. I used to read the Chronicle periodically years ago when I was on a mock UN panel in San Francisco, and had lost touch with what the UN was doing. Thanks for propelling onward with the issues of the world that deserve attention.

Remembering 11 September

I wanted to say how heartbroken I was by what happened a year ago. Even though these events were far away--I live in Belgium--I will never forget this horrible day. I can't understand how hate leads people to destroy one another. It is time to grow up, to accept our differences and to share our qualities in order to give a better world to our children.

I pray for all these people who died due to the insanity of a few men, and for their loved ones, their parents or their friends for whom life will never be the same. God bless us.

Disasters

The article ["Responding to the Orissa Cyclone", Issue 1, 2002] very meticulously talks about the super cyclone but fails to name the person who worked day and night from UNDP, i.e., Mr. S. K. Jha (Indian Administrative Service), the team leader, UNDP, Orissa. One must see it to believe that a single person can do magic to redress the plight of the suffering masses.

Mr. Jha indeed led the post-Super Cyclone rehab and sustainable recovery effort from Orissa under the UNDP banner and must be credited with leading from the front and working tirelessly to galvanize the National UN volunteers, getting them to rally behind the effort with maximum energy and creativity. In fact, it must be mentioned that the first UN In formation Technology Services volunteer in the world was a local Orissa girl appointed in Orissa under Mr. Jha's stewardship following the Super Cyclone.
