Civil Society

This is a goad model of collaboration between private sector and state sector that is advantageous for society. I really do like this project and this issue. [ E-learning for life, Issue 2, 2002]

Chronicle Subscription

I'm definitely going to have to get a subscription. I used to read the Chronicle periodically years ago when I was on a mock UN panel in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden , and had lost touch with what the UN was doing. Thanks for propelling onward with the issues of the world that deserve attention.

Maria Lewytzkyi Fly on the Wall

Thank you, this means a great deal to all of us.

Remembering 11 September

I wanted to say how heartbroken I was by what happened a year ago. Even though these events were far away--I live in Belgium--I will never forget this horrible day. I can't understand how hate leads people to destroy one another. It is time to grow up, to accept our differences and to share our qualities in order to give a better world to our children.

I pray I beg; I request; I entreat you; - used in asking a question, making a request, introducing a petition, etc.; as, Pray, allow me to go s>.

Disasters

The article ["Responding to the Orissa Cyclone", Issue 1, 2002] very meticulously talks about the super cyclone but fails to name the person who worked day and night from UNDP UNDP United Nations Development Programme
UNDP Unión Nacional para la Democracia y el Progreso (National Union for Democracy and Progress)
, i.e., Mr. S. K. Jha (Indian Administrative Service The (IAS) is one of the three All India Services of the Government of India; other two All India Services being the Indian Police Service (IPS) and the Indian Forest Service (IFS). ), the team leader, UNDP, Orissa. One must see it to believe that a single person can do magic to redress the plight of the suffering masses.

S. P. Rout

Mr. Jha indeed led the post-Super Cyclone rehab and sustainable recovery effort from Orissa under the UNDP banner and must be credited with leading from the front and working tirelessly to galvanize gal·va·nize

the National UN volunteers, getting them to rally behind the effort with maximum energy and creativity. In fact, it must be mentioned that the first UN In formation Technology Services volunteer in the world was a local Orissa girl appointed in Orissa under Mr. Jha's stewardship following the Super Cyclone.

The UN Chronicle encourages readers to write in their reactions and views on articles in the magazine and issues facing the United Nations. Where necessary, letters may be edited for clarity and length, but may reflect views which are not necessarily those of the United Nations.

Letters should include the writer's name, address and daytime telephone or fax number, and should be addressed to the UN Chronicle, United Nations, DC1-0530, New York, NY 10017, USA, or via e-mail at UN_Chronicle@un.org.
