The celebration will be held on Saturday June 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The same article gave incorrect dimensions of a digital countdown clock that will be unveiled. It is 26 feet tall and 5 feet wide.

Take a look at the date on this newspaper. On this day next year, the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials will begin at Hayward Field For other uses of "Hayward", see Hayward (disambiguation).
Hayward Field at University of Oregon is one of the most well-known historic track and field stadiums in the United States. It has been the home to the University of Oregon Track and Field teams since 1919.

To mark that milestone, local organizers are inviting the public to celebrate on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Fifth Street Public Market in downtown Eugene.

"The kickoff event is short and sweet and free and fun," said Kari Westlund, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Local Olympians will unveil a digital clock - 26 feet long and 5 feet tall - in the market's parking lot at Fifth Avenue and High Street, that will count down the days until June 27, 2008, the first day of Trials competition.

The clock is similar to those popping up throughout Beijing, marking time until the Olympic Games Olympic games, premier athletic meeting of ancient Greece, and, in modern times, series of international sports contests. The Olympics of Ancient Greece

Also at Saturday's celebration, the local music group Steel Magnolias will play, market restaurants will set up food booths, and kids can play track-related games, such as the mini-high jump and the shot put roll.

In other Trials-related news, organizers disclosed at a press conference on Tuesday that several streets around Hayward Field will be closed or will have limited access for about 14 days: the 10-day Trials, from June 27 to July 6, 2008, plus a couple of days on either end for set-up and take-down.

Organizers plan to set up a fan festival area with food and fitness-related vendors on those streets and on the artificial turf Artificial turf, or synthetic turf, is a grass-like man-made surface manufactured from synthetic materials. It is most often used in arenas for sports that were originally or are normally played on grass, however, it is now being used on residential lawns and commercial  field behind the West Grand- stands.

On the field would be a stage for musical entertainment before and after competition, a big-screen TV to watch live action and a beer garden, said Dave Taylor, a former Nike executive, who is acting as chief of staff for the local organizing committee.

Organizers are expecting 15,000 ticket holders inside Hayward Field for each day of competition, and they hope several thousand more people - without tickets - will take part in the fan festival each day.

Also during the Trials, the stretch of Agate Street from 15th Avenue to 13th Avenue will be open only to special Trials shuttle buses, Jordan said.

And only meet-related traffic will be allowed on University Street - west of Hayward Field - from 15th Avenue to 18th Avenue, and to the south of the field, on 18th Avenue, from University Street to Agate Street.
