Computerworld has followed this issue longer than anyone. In February 1984, Editor-in-Chief Paul Gillin (then a reporter for Computerworld) got a tip from a source in Detroit, who had an idea that was so offbeat off·beat

, that Gillin thought it just might make his editors happy. The idea was that a lot of computers would stop working on New Year's Day New Year's Day, among ancient peoples the first day of the year frequently corresponded to the vernal or autumnal equinox, or to the summer or winter solstice. In the Middle Ages it was celebrated among Christians usually on Mar. 25. , 2000. Until then, no one wanted to listen.

With that conversation, Gillin began his education on the Year 2000 and Computerworld reported its first story about the problem.
