Councillors' fury at secret report on hotel plans; Tories to continue opposing scheme.

CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a hotel at a key beauty spot in west Wirral have come under fire from local politicians.

The Sail project for the marine lake, in West Kirby, would see a new boutique hotel Boutique hotel is a term originating in North America to describe intimate, usually luxurious or quirky hotel environments. Boutique hotels differentiate themselves from larger chain/branded hotels and motels by providing personalized level accommodation and services / facilities.  built on a council-owned car park along with a new sailing school.

Last night, Tory leader Jeff Green Jeff Green may refer to:
  • Jeff Green (NASCAR), NASCAR NEXTEL Cup driver and 2000 Busch Series champion.
  • Jeff Green (basketball), Seattle Supersonics basketball player
  • Jeff Green (editor-in-chief), editor-in-chief for Games for Windows magazine.
blasted Wirral Council for trying to push the scheme through "behind closed doors" and said the council was denying local people the opportunity to be involved in decision-making on the project.

Cllrs Gerry Ellis Gerry Ellis (born November 12, 1957 in Columbia, Missouri) is a former professional American football player who played running back for seven seasons for the Green Bay Packers.  and Geoffrey Watt have also criticised the cabinet for pushing ahead with the scheme.

Details of the report were revealed in the Daily Post after the report was leaked.

Cllr Green said he was concerned that councillors had been told not to comment even though "the facts have been reported in the paper and are deemed to be pretty accurate".

He said: "I think it's absurd that the director of law at the council should be trying to prevent any discussion of what the authority is planning.

"The decision is being taken behind closed doors so that local residents will not be able to influence what is being done. The whole process stinks."

Cllr Geoffrey Watt said that at an area forum meeting earlier this year "we had assurance from officers that they would put this in the public domain and not make it exempt".

And Cllr Ellis added: "We have had extensive consultation on this over a number of years, and the public have totally rejected these proposals."

He said the plans would "destroy the look of West Kirby promenade promenade

, cause traffic chaos and lose vital parking spaces".

He said: "As the councillor for that part of West Kirby, I will continue to oppose it."

Cllr Green also said any future Conservative administration would seek to find a way to halt the development.

The report to be considered by Wirral Council cabinet tonight details the conditions under which council officers recommend the scheme should proceed.

It was halted earlier this year when the authority said it wanted to work with The Sail's developers before making a final decision.
