Councillor bid to ban pawn shops; TRADING.

A COUNCILLOR wants to stop a pawn shop chain from the United Kingdom opening in his city.

Cllr Niall McNeilus said the pawn shop was "the lowest of the low" and he would be urging Galway City Council Galway City Council (Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe) is an institution of local government in Galway, Ireland. Previously Galway Corporation, it was founded in 1485 by The Tribes of Galway via a Charter of Mayorality granted to the town in December 1484 by  not to grant planning permission.

The Labour politician, who owns a jewellery shop in the city, said there was a danger burglars would use pawn shops to sell stolen property.

He added: "We don't pawn jewellery in our own shop but I am concerned about the lack of regulation in this country on this activity because it really is nothing more than money lending.

"I would also be worried burglars would use these stores to fence their goods."
