Council to reconsider free swim sessions.


COUNCILLORS are being asked to have a change of heart over offering free swimming sessions for the young and elderly in Nuneaton and Bedworth Nuneaton and Bedworth (nənē`tən), district (1991 pop. 115,300), Warwickshire, central England. The district primarily comprises the city of Nuneaton and the town of Bedworth. The district's growth was based on coal mining. .

A government scheme to give the under-16s and over-60s free admission to council-run pools throughout the country was not taken up by the local authority.

Instead, swimmers in the borough can pay pounds 10 for an Activity Pass, which incorporates the Passport to Leisure, for the benefit of gives reduced-cost swimming.

This decision not to go with the government scheme was made by Tory-controlled cabinet members in April, because it would need an extra pounds 50,000 of council taxpayers money to implement. Now the cabinet is being urged to reconsider re·con·sid·er

Coun Bill Sheppard said: "When this scheme was first announced, our officers were all for it. The cabinet disagreed because of costings, which I feel can be disputed. The cabinet members are being asked at their next meeting on June 10 to look at this issue again and plead plead v. 1) in civil lawsuits and petitions, the filing of any document (pleading) including complaints, petitions, declarations, motions, and memoranda of points and authorities.  with the Minister that Nuneaton and Bedworth is allowed to be included in the scheme.

"Free swimming for the young and old is a great idea, especially on health and safety grounds. When people talk about obesity problems, swimming can provide the ideal form of exercise."
