Council splashes out on more free water butts.

 are again being offered by Kirklees Kirklees is a metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, England. It has a population of 390,000 and includes the settlements of Batley, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Dewsbury, Heckmondwike, Holmfirth, Huddersfield, Marsden, Meltham, Mirfield and Slaithwaite.  Council.

The environmental measure was a huge success last year and now more money is being made available.

The Kirklees Council cabinet will decide later today when it meets in Huddersfield to issue free water butts to Kirklees residents. A similar scheme in 2008, costing pounds 30,000, saw the full number of 900 allocated in just 90 minutes.

The large demand has led to a further pounds 25,000 being allocated by the council this year in order to give more people the opportunity to have a free water butt Wa´ter butt`

Those receiving one last year will not be eligible for the new scheme.

The details of how to apply will be advertised in the council's Kirklees Together magazine in September. To give people more chance to apply this time applications will be selected at random from all those received up to a deadline towards the end of September.

Clr David Sheard, joint cabinet member for environmental services, welcomed the plans. He said: "This is another chance for more householders in Kirklees to have a free water butt to enable them to gather rainwater for garden watering.

"Having a water butt keeps water bills low for those with water meters.
