Council ready to award $1.5 million in grants.

The City Council is set to hand out $1.5 million in federal grant money at its meeting Monday night.

The city is to allocate $760,547 in Community Development Block Grant money and $756,676 in Home Investment Partnership funds.

At a public hearing in March, the Community Development Advisory Committee evaluated 16 requests for funding and picked 13 to give money to. The council makes the final decision at a public hearing Monday during its meeting at 7 p.m. in the Council Meeting Room at City Hall, 225 Fifth St.

The committee recommended giving $321,891 to St. Vincent de Paul Vin·cent de Paul   , Saint 1581-1660.

Human rights award

Beatriz Martinez, coordinator of the Springfield School District's Welcome Center, received the Human Rights Leadership Award from Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect on Tuesday.

The daughter of migrant farmworkers, Martinez has instituted programs to help immigrant families, including English and literacy classes, parenting classes and a mothers' support group.

She is involved with the Lane County Migrant Education Program and is a key member of the planning committee planning committee n (in local government) → comité m de planificación  for the annual Latino Family Conference.
