Council ponders new name.


RESIDENTS and organisations are to be consulted on possible names for the new County Durham “Durham county” redirects here. For other uses, see Durham County.

County Durham is a county in north-east England. It can be used to refer to 4 different entities:
  • the historic County of Durham
  • the administrative county of Durham
 "super" council.

By next April, the county's seven district and borough councils will join the existing county council to form one unitary unitary

pertaining to a single object or individual.
 or "all purpose" council for the area.

And to mark the change, leading councillors are considering a name change for the new authority.

Members of the council's cabinet have decided to consult the public and local organisations on five possible names, at a series of recently announced consultation meetings on the new authority.

The meetings will discuss proposals for how the council should provide people with more "local choice" and "local voice" over council services.

But councillors have now decided to also use the meetings to take soundings soundings
