Council of Trade Unions pushes for five percent wage increase.

The Council of Trade Unions (CTU CTU Colorado Technical University

) says there is strong evidence to support a five percent wage increase for all workers. President Ross Wilson said the economy had grown by around 20 percent in the last five years but wages had gone up by only 10.9 percent.

Last month the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) is the largest private sector trade union in New Zealand. It was formed in 1996 by the merger of the Engineers' Union (EU), the Printing, Packaging and Manufacturing Union (PPMU), and the Communications and Energy Workers'  (EPMU EPMU Environmental Protection Medical Unit ) launched its "A Fair Share--five in '05" campaign for a five per cent pay rise for members. The CTU's governing body Noun 1. governing body - the persons (or committees or departments etc.) who make up a body for the purpose of administering something; "he claims that the present administration is corrupt"; "the governance of an association is responsible to its members"; "he , the National Affiliates' Council, has voted to support a public campaign for pay increases. Union militancy would grow as unions followed the EPMU's campaign, Wilson said.

He urged workers to join unions, get organised and demand decent pay rises. Pay rates in Australia were on average 25 percent higher than in New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. .

The CTU has begun productivity talks with the Government and Business New Zealand representatives. "We recognise the need to talk about skill development, productivity improvement and industry development," Wilson said. "But workers want a gesture of good faith from employers. If workers are to work to achieve further productivity increases, then they need to see that the benefits will be shared."
