Council face pounds 5m budget headache.

COST-CUTTING plans are being drawn up by Wrexham council in a bid to make massive savings of pounds 5m in 2010-11.

This is on top of work to rein in to check the speed of, or cause to stop, by drawing the reins.

Council chiefs said they were facing testing times ahead to provide levels of service for tax payers and would not rule out the possibility of redundancies.

Wrexham's finances have been squeezed because of a wide range of factors including demands on children's services, income loss over charges such as planning fees, and less interest being paid by banks on money which is invested.

A consultation exercise with the public is planned as the council prepares its strategy.

A long list of possible savings is now being drawn up. These include changes to the delivery of services where external contractors would be used to undertake tasks.

Or working practices may be examined to see where efficiencies can be made.

There could also be charges for services such as leisure activities.

Also on the list are the possibility of reducing mental health support to schools, with alternative funding being sought to minimise the impact.
