Council cut plans are in jeopardy; ASSEMBLY.


PLANS to reduce the number of councils in are in jeopardy - despite pounds 5.5million having already been spent formulating them.

If the proposals to establish 11 new councils instead of the current 26 by 2011 fail to proceed, local government elections will have to be held next year.

Problems have arisen in the time-tabling of the ambitious reorganisation Noun 1. reorganisation - the imposition of a new organization; organizing differently (often involving extensive and drastic changes); "a committee was appointed to oversee the reorganization of the curriculum"; "top officials were forced out in the cabinet  of local government.

 issue is getting agreement by the Executive on the new council boundaries.

Environment Minister Edwin Poots Alderman Edwin Poots MLA is a Northern Ireland politician and a Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Lagan Valley. He is one of three DUP MLAs for Lagan Valley.  warned colleagues that time to reach agreement was running out.

He told them that if the new boundaries are not agreed by the end of this year, he will not be able to prepare the necessary legislation to establish the new authorities.

He predicted this could collapse the Executive's reform programme.
