Council approval for arts academy.

BIRMINGHAM'S first school dedicated to digital, creative and performing arts has moved a step closer to getting off the ground.

Members of the city council cabinet have approved an outline agreement with the Ormiston Trust, which will run the school for 14 to 19-year-olds as an academy free from direct local authority control.

The academy, backed by Birmingham City University Birmingham City University (formerly Birmingham Polytechnic and the University of Central England in Birmingham) is a University in the city of Birmingham, England.

The main university campus is located in Perry Barr, Birmingham.
 and Maverick TV, will be built at Eastside, close to Matthew Boulton College Matthew Boulton College is a Further and Higher Education college situated in the Eastside of Birmingham, West Midlands. It has Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) status in Print Media & Graphics, Business & Professional Services and Vocational Medical Sciences. , and is expected to greet its first students in 2011. And a second specialist academy, running engineering courses, sponsored by Aston University Outside:
  • Nationwide and NatWest cashpoints either side of the guild steps.
Accommodation

Aston University has both standard and en-suite accommodation on campus.
, could be open by August the following year.

Council leader Coun Mike Whitby described the academies scheme as "very exciting" and said the engineering base would help manufacturing in the Midlands.

Coun Whitby (Con, Harborne) said: "The fact we are talking about opening an engineering academy in Birmingham, when everyone is talking about the need to grow the manufacturing sector of the economy, is particularly important."
