Birmingham (bûr`mĭnghăm')

1 City (1990 pop. 265,968), seat of Jefferson co., N central Ala., in the Jones Valley near the southern end of the Appalachian system; founded and inc.
 City Council spent pounds 9.2m on publicity, figures from the Taxpayers' Alliance have revealed.

The authority was the highest publicity spender in the country, with its bill up from pounds 6.9m in 1996-97 but down from the pounds 10.4m spent in 2006-07.

Across the country, the figures showed councils are spending nearly pounds 430m a year on pubicity.

Town halls have been laying out the cash on activities such as running press offices, promoting services, and advertising for jobs.
