Supetar (Ital. ) Commission's recommendations, California Council on Case Support and Retention Co-Chairs Leon Panetta and Donna Tuttle today commended the efforts of the Council members and all the communities throughout California in protecting the state's military bases. "Through Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's farsighted far·sight·ed or far-sight·ed adj. 1. Able to see distant objects better than objects at close range; hyperopic. 2. Capable of seeing to a great distance. leadership and a united California Congressional delegation, communities across California have been very successful in defending their military bases from closure," said Council Co-Chairs Panetta and Tuttle. California did exceptionally well in this latest round of base closures. Only three bases were closed -- with the majority of those positions being realigned within the state. The net result is that California retained more than 99 percent of all U.S. Department of Defense jobs within the State. "Throughout these past 18 months, we have been pleased with the research, focus and commitment of each California community with a military base," said Co-Chair Panetta. "Each proved to the Department of Defense and the Commission that the bases we possess in our state are critical for the national defense, now and in the future." "Communities took ownership of their bases and used every possible resource to make their case to the Department of Defense and the BRAC Commission," said Co-Chair Tuttle. "The Department of Defense has confirmed that California bases are critical to current and future military training and operational objectives." The Council was comprised of 19 people, including 11 retired Senior Flag officers from all services and eight senior business executives. Recognizing that California suffered huge losses in previous BRAC rounds, the co-chairs acknowledged the extraordinary work that each Council member contributed to the overall outcome.
