Council's arms no.A COUNCIL last night voted to turn its back on investment by companies involved in the arms trade. Councillors in Derry Derry, city, Northern Ireland Derry (dĕr`ē) or Londonderry (lŭn'dəndĕr`ē, lŭn`dəndĕr'ē) city (1991 pop. 95,371) and district, NW Northern Ireland. passed a motion inspired by a call from the Foyle Ethical Investment Campaign (FEIC FEIC Financial Executives International Canada ). The group urged the rejection of offers by arms companies to set up factories in the city. Peter Doran of FEIC said: "We are delighted with the motion that has been passed. "It is as much as we could have hoped for and is probably unprecedented for a city to formally reject the arms trade as a source of jobs creation. "It is also highly significant that the council is moving in the direction of ethical investment." |
