Cougars envision busy schedule at state.

Activities of various national and worldwide organizations for youth aimed at developing character, citizenship, and individual skills. Scouting began when Robert S.
tapes on his team's state quarterfinal opponent, Crow coach Ryan Harbert did the next best thing: gathered information on No. 1 Imbler, a potential semifinal matchup for the Cougars.

If that doesn't speak volumes about Crow's confidence, well, then confidence has a new meaning.

Class 1A boys basketball tournament in Baker City at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday against eighth-ranked Ione, the champion of the Big Sky League.

Harbert couldn't persuade anyone to make the five-hour trip to scout Ione - located about 65 miles southwest of Pendleton - during the Cardinals' 78-61 playoff victory over Country Christian on Friday.

"I really don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

a whole lot about them," Harbert said.

Instead, he went with Plan B and gained as much insight about undefeated Imbler as he could.

That included a chat with Mohawk coach Bart Rothenberger, whose Indians were held to 19 percent shooting in a 73-34 loss to Imbler on Friday.

"He said Imbler was the best 1A team he's seen in five years," said Harbert, who also has two game tapes of the Panthers.

Before that anticipated matchup between No. 1 and No. 2, however, the Cougars have to get past Ione. And judging by its 74-36 second-round rout of North Lake on Friday, Crow is ready to fly.

"Ione is going to be a tough game, but if we get by them, Imbler is going to be a good matchup," said Harbert, a former Marist assistant in his second season with Crow. "If we get that far and play our defensive style, you never know what can happen."

The Cougars, who moved from the Class 2A Trico League to 1A before this season, are led by the inside-outside tandem of 6-foot-3 junior post Kevin Stevens-Slaughter and senior point guard Jesse Meeks.

A fleet-footed lefty, Meeks sets the tone for Crow, averaging 13 points and six assists per game.

"When Kevin plays well, the team plays well," Harbert said. "He's one of the better rebounders I've ever coached. Actually, he's the best. He's amazing a·maze

Meeks joins senior starters Cody Hamby, Mark Pervis and Levi McCay as Crow's inspirational leaders.

"It's not that we got there, but it's about what we do at state," Meeks said.

"We don't want to just get there and not be good enough. We want to do something at state."

On the girls side, Mountain West champion Lowell (22-4) also faces the Big Sky champion in the quarterfinals at Baker City. Murray was a longtime assistant at Gold Beach before taking over the Red Devils; he was on the Gold Beach bench when the Panthers knocked off Lowell in the 2003 Class 2A semifinals. Like Crow, Lowell moved from the Trico League to the Mountain West before this season.

When he accepted the job, Murray told the Red Devils he believed they would qualify for the state tournament.

"I know how we're capable of playing," Murray said. "We've had great spurts of excellent play. ... I believe we can play with anyone."

Senior forward Lindsey Maher leads Lowell with 19 points per game and Jessica Comstock adds almost 10 points per game for the Red Devils, who have won 16 of their past 17.

"It's hard to get a pulse of this team," Murray said. "They don't get really excited until game time. They're very businesslike busi·ness·like
