Cottage Grove wins four weights for Sky-Em title.

PLEASANT HILL - Cottage Grove Cottage Grove, village (1990 pop. 22,935), Washington co., SE Minn., near the St. Croix River; inc. 1965. There is farming (cattle, sheep, corn, and soybeans) and manufacturing (chemicals and machinery).  emerged from a highly competitive eight-team field to capture the Sky-Em League prep wrestling title with 334 points Saturday at Pleasant Hill High School.

WRESTLING

The Lions, who had a 16-point lead over Elmira after the first day of the meet, were followed by the Falcons with 299 points, La Pine with 220 1/2 , Siuslaw with 205 and Pleasant Hill with 203 1/2 .

"We entered 28 kids, that's the most you can enter," Cottage Grove coach Bill Thompson said. "And on the second day we still had 26 in it."

There were no surprises in the championship matches as the top seeds in each weight class defeated the No. 2 seeds.

Cottage Grove had four individual champions to three for runner-up Elmira and two apiece for La Pine, Siuslaw and Pleasant Hill.

 (130), Billy Dunn (135) and Justin Benston (145) were title winners for the Lions. Anthony Ough (125), Josh Gannon (171) and Jayson Conger (215) were champions for Elmira.

In addition, Cottage Grove picked up a second place by Caleb Calkins (125) and third places by Chris Seiffert (152) and Mike Wells Mike Wells (born June 1, 1971 is a former NFL defensive lineman who played from 1994-2001. He played for the Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears andIndianapolis Colts. He played defensive line for the University of Iowa as well.  (189) to go with five fourth places and six fifth places.

"Everybody contributed," Thompson said."We have a group of 10 seniors that have been with the program a long time, and (the title) is a tribute to the leadership of those seniors."

Josh Gannon of Elmira repeated as champion at 171 pounds by defeating Kyle Thompson Kyle Thompson (born April 25, 1979) is an American professional golfer.

Thompson has been a member of the Nationwide Tour since 2003. He won two events in 2007 which put him in the top 25 on the money list which will earn him a PGA Tour card for 2008.

 winning second titles were Brian Stevens of Siuslaw at 112 pounds after winning the title at 103 last year, Pleasant Hill's Craig Edwards at 119 after winning at 112 last year and Benston of the Lions at 145 after winning at 135 last year.

"I've been here 28 years, and (during that time) we've never been district champions," Thompson said. " We've been dual-meet champions but never district champions."

Runner-up Elmira will actually be taking more wrestlers than Cottage Grove to the Class 3A state meet at The Pavilion in Salem, Feb. 17-19. The Falcons have 11 state meet qualifiers to the Lions' seven.

"We wrestled the best we could as 16 of the 19 kids we entered placed," Elmira coach Scott Shannon Michael Scott Shannon is a radio disc jockey, current co-host of "The Big Show" on WPLJ and the official voice of the Sean Hannity Show.

Born in St. Louis, Scott Shannon grew up an Army brat in Indianapolis, Indiana.
 said. "We had a couple of disappointments, but I'm proud of the kids."

Ten of those 11 state meet qualifiers will be back next year, led by juniors Jayson Conger and Gannon and freshman Anthony Ough.

Other individual champions were Nick Lutz (189) of Siuslaw, David Raver (140) and Brady Tyson (160) of La Pine, and Richard Furrer (275) of Junction City.

Dunn was voted MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  for the 103-140 weights, and Lutz was MVP for 145-275.

Thompson and Shannon were named coaches of the year. Benston pinned all four of his opponents.

Jett Cannon (112), Lackey (119), R.J. Edgar (130), Brian Henderson Brian Henderson (born 15 September 1931) is a New Zealand-born Australian television personality who hosted the Australian version of Bandstand from 1958 until 1972.  (140) and Ben Gray (215) all won by fall for Coquille in their championship matches, while Colton Holmes (103), Robert Nickerson (125) and Joey Lewis (189) won by decision. Shawn Fletcher (135), Travis Witters (160) and Dan Kintner (171) won titles for North Bend.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Class 3A state meet.

District 2

MILL CITY - Justin Branson (103), Thomas Kallai (130), Hunter Thornton (140) and Kole Logan (275) were individual champions to lead Central Linn linn

The Cobras had 248 points, followed by Scio with 161, Monroe with 150, Colton with 140 and Jefferson with 137 1/2 . Mohawk was eighth in the 14-team meet with 121 and Harrisburg was ninth with 118 1/2 .

Dillon Bellmore of Mohawk won the title at 145 pounds, and Casey Fletcher of Monroe captured the 215 title.

District 3

GLENDALE - Brian Toncray (103 pounds), Brett McNichols (171) and Bruce Eyles (215) won individual titles to lead Lowell to fifth place at the 14-team district meet.

Glide won the team title with 214 points, followed by Myrtle Point with 202 1/2 , Lakeview with 198 1/2 , Reedsport with 114 and the Red Devils with 107 1/2 .

Cash Gardner of Oakridge won the title at 130 pounds.

Casey Walker (119) and Garrett Manske (145) of Glide, and Myrtle Point's James Syles (135), Cameron Cagley (140) and Korby Kennedy (275) also were title winners.
