Cottage Grove mayor reacts to challenger.

Byline: Karen McCowan The Register-Guard

COTTAGE GROVE Cottage Grove, village (1990 pop. 22,935), Washington co., SE Minn., near the St. Croix River; inc. 1965. There is farming (cattle, sheep, corn, and soybeans) and manufacturing (chemicals and machinery).  - Incumbent Gary Williams For the wrestler with the same name, see .
Gary B. Williams (born March 4, 1945 in Collingswood, New Jersey, United States) is the current head coach of the University of Maryland's Men's basketball team.
is standing on his record as mayor as he faces a challenger who filed notice of intent to sue the city last year after it failed to support his proposal to build a recreational vehicle park inside the city's urban growth boundary "UGB" redirects here. UGB may also refer to Unión de Guerreros Blancos (White Warriors' Union), a death squad founded to repress leftist elements in El Salvador.

Farther south, there is also a contested mayoral race in Sutherlin and contested City Council races in Drain and Yoncalla.

In Cottage Grove, Williams characterized Ernest Olson's run against him as a reaction to the city planning city planning, process of planning for the improvement of urban centers in order to provide healthy and safe living conditions, efficient transport and communication, adequate public facilities, and aesthetic surroundings.  staff's abandonment of its efforts to initiate a zone change to allow his RV park, after encountering neighborhood opposition.

"He thinks that as mayor he can direct the city as he wants," said Williams, a house painter. "But the Planning Commission Noun 1. planning commission - a commission delegated to propose plans for future activities and developments

has to review development proposals and weigh them against state law and city ordinances."

Williams said he is proud of the city's accomplishments during his first term, including construction of a new high school and a new hospital, and the designation of Cottage Grove as an All-America City.

"My record is pretty clear - Cottage Grove is recognized nationally as a city that is getting things done," he said. "Other cities throughout the state are looking to us as a model."

His goal in his second term is to devise a 20-year, tourism-oriented economic growth plan.

Olson, himself a former Planning Commission member, denied that his candidacy is based on the rejection of his RV park. And he noted that he has withdrawn the tort claim notice that he filed.

"This is not a vendetta vendetta (vĕndĕt`ə) [Ital.,=vengeance], feud between members of two kinship groups to avenge a wrong done to a relative. Although the term originated in Corsica, the custom has also been practiced in other parts of Italy, in other ," he added. "I just thought it would be time for a change. I think we need more direct communication between the city and the citizens of Cottage Grove."

He agreed that Cottage Grove has accomplished positive things in the past four years.

"We've got our water treatment plant (expansion) going, we're an All-America City, and the new high school - I think we've got everything in the makings."

He added that he intends to be an advocate for The Grove Speedway, a local racetrack that has stirred some community complaints.

"I'm strictly for the Speedway," he said.
