A contributor to the Hillier Manual of Trees and Shrubs notes that the 1971 book describes 101 species of Cotoneaster, while this volume includes some 400. Though some of these are not readily available, this guide should inspire growers to seek less common varieties of this hardy shrub. Fryer (Linnean Society, London) and Hylmo (d. 2001) present the latest information on plant classification, habit, history, taxonomy, distribution, genetics, and cultivation. The volume features color plates (some of species with berries in colors other than red), Latin descriptions of new taxa, a glossary, and bibliography. Fryer grows cotoneasters at her UK nursery and home garden. The University of Alnarp in Sweden dedicated a Cotoneaster arboretum in Hylmo's memory.
