OAKLAND, Calif. -- Fifty years ago, the idea of Cost Plus World Market began when San Francisco businessman William Amthor put his entrepreneurial spirit to work and set up a business of selling rattan rattan (rătăn`), name for a number of plants of the genera Calamus, Daemonorops, and Korthalsia climbing palms of tropical Asia, belonging to the family Palmae (palm family).  baskets and furniture from overseas along the city's famed Fisherman's Wharf Fisherman's Wharf may refer to:

  • Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, California - a hugely popular tourist destination and still-functioning wharf, located in San Francisco,
. San Franciscans took to his merchandise quickly -- loving the prices and the authenticity of the imported merchandise as well as the uniqueness -- they had never seen any store like it before.

The first Cost Plus World Market store opened on October 23, 1958 at 2552 Taylor Street in San Francisco. Amthor named the store after his pricing strategy, "cost plus 10 percent," making it clear to the customer that the prices would be affordable. Amthor traveled regularly to Asia and Europe scouting bargains and bringing back an eclectic mix of merchandise. At any time in the store in the 1960s and 1970s, one could find pottery from Spain, gauze gauze (gawz) a light, open-meshed fabric of muslin or similar material.

And, still more than 40 years later, the Papasan Chair is as popular as ever, with new generations of students every year choosing the Papasan for their first home away from home.

Fast forward 50 years and Cost Plus World Market is now a chain of nearly 300 stores. Today, our merchants keep Amthor's adventurous spirit alive as they travel the globe to exotic places far and wide searching for unique, handcrafted hand·craft
