Corzine lays out Tunnel vision.

New Jersey State Governor Jon Corzine Jon Stevens Corzine (born January 1, 1947) is the Governor of New Jersey. He was sworn into office on January 17, 2006, for a four-year term ending in 2010. He represented New Jersey in the United States Senate from 2001 until 2006, when he stepped down to take his seat as , at a New York New York, state, United States

Building Congress luncheon September 21, spoke about securing infrastructure linking the two states that will become vital as more people migrate to the region. A long-time champion of the $7.2 billion dollar Trans-Hudson Rail Tunnel, Corzine promised the first shovel should be put in the ground by 2009.

The tunnel will run under the Hudson River Hudson River

The tunnel is expected to ease pressure on the transportation arteries currently clogged around the city and help prevent blockages keeping people from moving to the region. Some of the traffic choking Choking Definition

the single track commuter rail system linking people along the river with Manhattan will be circumvented, and cars will be reduced from the road, Corzine said. In turn, the region's fragile resources will be preserved due to less gas consumption and air pollution.

"There are currently 60 million people within four hours traveling distance of this great marketplace of New York and New Jersey," Corzine said. "We anticipate enormous growth of those numbers in the years ahead. The Trans-Hudson passenger rail tunnel is an absolute necessity. This thing has to get built," he said.

Other means to connect the states Corzine touched on included protecting New Jersey's substantial seaports This is a list of the world's seaports: Atlantic Ocean

"We are one community and it is important for us to work together on every aspect of public policy as time goes by," Corzine said.

Corzine advocated reaching beyond the borders of the tri-state area There are a number of places in the United States known as tri-state areas where three states or holdings meet at one point (a tripoint), or in proximity to each other. The two most well-known are for the New York and Chicago metropolitan areas.  and the country to connect with business resources outside.

He illustrated the need to share energy through connecting power lines, such as the one currently being laid between New Jersey and Long Island, to help plug the anticipated 6000-7000 megawatt meg·a·watt

Corzine also touched on the importance of rebuilding the World Trade Center as quickly and efficiently as possible, and helping rescue workers who developed health problems during their rescue efforts, to send a message to the world that New York is moving forward.

The New York Construction Council and the New Jersey Action for Alliance also helped organize the luncheon held in Cipriani's Wall Street.
