Corvas appoints Randall E. Woods as president and chief executive officer.

) Monday announced the appointment of Randall E. Woods as president, chief executive officer and director.

Woods brings more than 23 years of pharmaceutical industry experience, serving most recently as president of U.S. operations for Boehringer Mannheim Pharmaceuticals Corp. (BMPC BMPC Battalion Mobile Production Center ), a division of Corange Ltd. As previously announced, David S. Kabakoff, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer, will continue as chairman of the board of directors.

"Randy is a seasoned executive with experience in both biopharmaceuticals and traditional pharmaceuticals. His proven business leadership skills will serve Corvas well as we move toward product development and commercialization. I look forward to working with Randy to evolve the company's strategy," said Kabakoff.

During his tenure as president of BMPC's U.S. pharmaceutical operations, Woods, 44, was responsible for developing the strategy and business plan during its start-up phase. Additionally, he spearheaded the completion of several collaborative business development projects. Before becoming president, Woods served as vice president of marketing and sales.

Prior to joining BMPC in 1993, Woods held various sales and marketing management positions at Eli Lilly Eli Lilly can refer to:

  • Colonel Eli Lilly (1839-1898), founder of Eli Lilly and Company
  • Eli Lilly (industrialist) (1885-1977), former president of Eli Lilly and Company
 & Co. over a 20-year period, where he was most recently responsible for the marketing of hospital products. Woods holds a bachelor's of science degree in biology/chemistry and a masters in business administration.

Corvas is currently collaborating with Schering-Plough Corp. in the development of oral thrombin inhibitors for chronic cardiovascular diseases, with Pfizer Inc. to develop neutrophil neutrophil /neu·tro·phil/ (noo´tro-fil)
