Corvallis businessman plans run for governor.

A Willamette Valley The Willamette Valley (pronounced [wɪˈlæ.mɪt], with the accent on the second syllable) is the region in northwest Oregon in the United States that surrounds the Willamette River as it proceeds northward from its  businessman with Lane County roots plans to formally declare his candidacy for governor Thursday.

Steve Shields Steve Shields could refer to any of the following people:

, 53, said on Tuesday he plans to become the third Democratic candidate for the state's top office, joining former Gov. John Kitz-haber and former Secretary of State Bill Bradbury Bill Bradbury (born 1949) is the Secretary of State for the U.S. state of Oregon. Bradbury, a Democrat, previously served in the Oregon Legislative Assembly, and ran unsuccessfully against incumbent Senator Gordon Smith in 2002.  in the 2010 primary contest.

The Corvallis resident has scheduled announcements in Portland, Eugene, Salem and Corvallis and plans to file candidacy papers with the Oregon Elections Division.

In a prepared statement, Shields emphasized that he is the only candidate for governor without experience in politics or state government.

"I'm the only candidate not stuck in the politics of the past, which means I'm the only real change agent in this race," he said.

Shields said Oregon needs "a new type of leader" who has "the real-world experience and confidence to spark truly innovative approaches and real change."

Shields grew up in Marcola and worked at a lumber mill in Springfield as a college student. He has degrees from Oregon State University Oregon State University, at Corvallis; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1858 as Corvallis College, opened 1865. In 1868 it was designated Oregon's land-grant agricultural college and was taken over completely by the state in 1885.  and the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities. . Shields spent 18 years at Hewlett-Packard before leaving as an executive in 2003. He currently is self-employed as a consultant.
