Cortina Systems Provides Complete, End-to-End PON Solution Optimized for Lower Systems Costs

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Cortina Systems, Inc. (Cortina), a fast-growing leader of intelligent communication solutions, today announced its second generation high performance Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) switch chipsets; CS8021 and CS8016. Building upon the success of Cortina's previous generation, the CS8021 is a highly integrated quad EPON Optical Line Terminal (OLT) device with bridging and switching capabilities, while the CS8016 is a 1 Gbps full bandwidth Optical Network Unit (ONU) device with complete traffic management and scheduling capabilities.

CS8021

On the Central Office side, the highly integrated CS8021 OLT simplifies board design by supporting four EPON ports in a single chip, enabling equipment vendors to develop high-port density chassis or stackable rack-mount systems. The dual Fast Ethernet management ports of CS8021 OLT allow vendors to build a redundant (fault tolerant) managing system. Additionally, the extensible SDRAM frame buffer facilitates Quality of Service.

CS8016

On the CPE side, the CS8016 ONU offers a wide range of Quality-of-Service and traffic management services to ensure that bandwidth, delay, and jitter requirements for each ONU are met according to the traffic profile extracted from the Service Level Agreement (SLA). The CS8016 ONU also integrates frame buffer memory to eliminate the need for external RAMs.

The CS8021 OLT and CS8016 ONU work together to provide differentiated services for various categories of traffic to ensure preferential treatment to high-priority traffic such as voice and video. Both chips meet the Chinese Telecom Compliance requirements.
