At the PalmSource(R) Developer Conference, Corsoft Corp. today announced the latest version of Plug2Net for Palm OS(R). This easy-to-use solution now enables users to connect their Palm Powered(TM) device to the Internet via USB and Bluetooth.

"We believe Plug2Net has now become an even more powerful solution that enables Palm Powered users to connect to the Internet easily, regardless of whether their device-of-choice comes equipped with built-in wireless connectivity options or not," said Larry Berkin, director of developer marketing, for PalmSource. "Using its expertise in mobile messaging, Corsoft has created a simple solution that leverages the flexibility of Palm OS and is designed to give mobile professionals access to Internet data using USB, serial, infrared and Bluetooth."

Mobile professionals often need to access the Internet to obtain and manage information while on-the-go. Sales professionals, field service employees, and traveling executives, to name a few, benefit from the ability to download email correspondence, corporate data, and Web pages to their handhelds. Unfortunately, wireless connectivity options and the lack of ubiquitous coverage (especially for those who travel internationally) result in difficulties in accessing and managing data. Plug2Net provides supplemental access to the Internet regardless of cellular service, enabling users to access their critical data via multiple connectivity options on their devices: USB, serial, infrared or Bluetooth.

From any Internet-aware Windows PC An x86-based computer that runs some version of Windows. See x86 and Windows. , users can download the Plug2Net desktop software from Corsoft's Web site (www.corsoft.com) and within minutes start accessing email, browsing the Internet or managing corporate data on their PDAs. For example, a sales representative visiting the office of a client can connect their PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A handheld computer for managing contacts, appointments and tasks. It typically includes a name and address database, calendar, to-do list and note taker, which are the functions in a personal information manager (see PIM).  to a local Windows PC, download Plug2Net desktop software, and begin downloading emails, sales reports and their updated travel itinerary to be viewed later while riding on the airplane airplane, aeroplane, or aircraft, heavier-than-air vehicle, mechanically driven and fitted with fixed wings that support it in flight through the dynamic action of the air.  back to the home office. The Plug2Net pass-through connection via the desktop software enacts security controls on the client's PC to ensure no data from the client's PC or network is copied to the PDA.

Users of non-wireless handhelds can leverage the Internet connectivity of their cell phones to connect to the Internet by using serial, infrared or Bluetooth interfaces. This capability allows users to access the Internet with their PDAs at times when they are traveling and a PC is not available. Plug2Net provides one-tap connectivity to most cellular carriers in the U.S. with an option to define custom configurations. The phone interface provides users with simplified dial-up connectivity.

The optional Plug2Net infrared adapter is a very small (thumb-sized) device with an infrared port A transmitter/receiver for infrared signals. See IrDA and IR remote control.  and includes a retractable re·tract

See USB.  on any Internet-connected Windows PC and enables IR connectivity between a laptop and a Palm OS device. The thumb-sized Plug2Net adapter is only 1.8" x 0.7" x 0.3".

Plug2Net is available for US$34.95, or it can be purchased with the infrared adapter for US$99.95. For a limited time, Plug2Net software can be purchased as a bundle with Corsoft's email application, Aileron aileron: see airfoil; airplane. , for only $69.95 (a savings of $14.95 if the two applications are purchased individually).
